Since coming back from break, we have had one confirmed case of Influenza B in the lower elementary school. Other schools have reported cases of Influenza A, as well.
Influenza A and B both cause very similar symptoms (fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, body aches, fatigue), and Influenza B sometimes causes more gastrointestinal issues (vomiting/diarrhea) in children.
Certain antiviral medications such as Tamiflu can shorten the illness if started within the first 48 hours, alongside supportive home care such as rest, fluids and over-the-counter medications.
Good hand washing and disinfection practices and covering your cough can help prevent the spread of Influenza A and B, as well.
Should you get flu symptoms, you should stay home to avoid contact with others except to get medical care. Once a fever is below 100 degrees for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication, and once respiratory symptoms such as coughing and spraying are subsiding, your child should be well enough to return to school.

4th Graders in Mrs. Starrett’s classroom learned about volcanoes. They experimented with thin & thick lava and determined which volcano has Cone Lava & which had Shield Lava!

Thank you to the Southern Aroostook Coomunity School After-School Program for hosting a "Winter Walk" last Friday and Saturday evenings. A great deal of time and energy went into creating this experience for our students and the community. Well done!

Jazmyn Ellingwood, Cooper Gardner, and Jakoby Porter represented Southern Aroostook High School at the annual Aroostook League Leadership Summit at the University of Maine at Presque Isle today. The event sponsored by the Aroostook League Athletic Directors is an opportunity for student-athletes from Aroostook County schools to learn more about leadership and their respective roles as positive role models to their peers, schools, and community. Thank you to the Aroostook County Athletic Directors for providing this opportunity to our students.
